McKenzie Health System is proud to announce that Dr. Mustafa Hamed, Medical Director of Emergency & Hospitalist Medicine, has been recognized as one of Crain’s Detroit Notable Leaders in Health Care 2026.

Crain’s Detroit Notable Leaders in Health Care program highlights individuals who demonstrate exemplary leadership, innovation, and community impact across Michigan’s health care landscape. This prestigious honor recognizes exceptional physicians and health care executives across Michigan who are driving meaningful change in their fields and communities.

Dr. Hamed has served McKenzie Health System for more than 15 years, overseeing emergency and hospital medicine at the critical-access facility in Sandusky. In addition to his role at McKenzie, he leads eight rural county health departments, serves as Sanilac County EMS Medical Director, and is an attending staff physician at Henry Ford Health. His broad scope of clinical and administrative leadership spans quality and utilization review, physician leadership, and oversight of trauma, stroke, and heart-attack systems of care across hospital, EMS, and public-health operations.

Among his most significant professional achievements, Dr. Hamed worked alongside the hospital team to achieve McKenzie Health System’s transformation into Michigan’s first fully accredited Level IV Trauma Center and secured the state’s first Acute Stroke Ready and Acute Heart Attack Ready designations. These milestones have expanded access to high-quality, time-sensitive care for rural residents, reduced unnecessary patient transfers, improved outcomes, and established a statewide model for delivering complex services close to home.

Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Hamed chairs the Michigan Board of Medicine and serves in several state and national leadership roles focused on physician regulation, rural health, trauma care, stroke systems, medical education, and emergency medical services.
