Construction scheduled for new Caro Center

Prior to the Coronavirus dominating headlines the past two months, folks in Tuscola County were monitoring the progress of the proposed new state psychiatric hospital near Caro. After many legal wranglings, a new facility, albeit a scaled back version from the original plans, is planned to get under construction in the Spring of 2021. The new 100-bed facility will be built on the 650-acre property where the current Caro Center is located. Original plans, approved by previous state leaders, called for a 200-bed $115 million hospital. The one being built will cost around $63 million and is expected to be completed some time in 2023. Currently, over 425 employees care for more than 85 patients in the outdated facility which has 38 buildings on their property, 28 of which are not usable.
