With the council’s personnel committee just having received preliminary narratives from the completed background checks on Monday, August 18, Sandusky will have to wait a little longer for a new police chief.
Current Police Chief Brett Lester, who began his work with the city in 1998 and became the police chief in 2010, plans to retire effective September 1, 2025.
Though the process to find his replacement got underway earlier this summer, progress seemingly stalled following the first round of interviews, with background checks being the cited reason for the delay. At Monday night’s meeting, City Manager Dave Faber noted that the background checks were a culmination of an estimated 80 hours of work.
Due to no hiring decisions having been made in time for Chief Lester’s departure, Officer Matthew Gezequel has been appointed to serve as chief during the September interim.
The Sandusky City Council will meet again Tuesday, September 2, at 5:30 p.m.
