With 18 children in attendance and 89 community members assisted by the event, last Thursday saw Sanilac County’s 13th Annual Shop With a Hero event.

The event, held at Sandusky Walmart on December 7, saw kids team up with heroes from Applegate Fire Department, Argyle Fire Department, Brown City Fire Department, Brown City Police Department, Croswell EMS, Croswell Police Department, Deckerville Police Department, Lexington Police Department, Marlette Police Department, Michigan State Police, Moore Township Fire Department, Sandusky Police Department, Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office, Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office Posse, and the Sanilac County Search & Rescue.

Children participants were selected by the county’s Department of Human Services for this year’s program, which featured a pizza dinner donated by Pizza Hut, with cookies and drinks provided by Walmart. Also provided by Walmart for the event were two photo prop areas and Santa hats for participants.

Children were able to take home their chosen gifts wrapped by volunteers from the county probation office, Deckerville Community Hospital and Michigan’s 9th District Office, as well as several local high schools, including Carsonville-Port Sanilac, Sandusky and Marlette.

To date, the program has helped 284 families with a total of 1,273 people. The organizers profusely thank those who donated their time or money towards the cause.
