Work on downtown Sandusky’s short-term parking solutions underway

Work on at least one approved short term parking solution in Sandusky has begun, with a gravel parking lot beginning to take shape at the former Sanilac Theater’s location on Lincoln Street.

With topsoil being stripped and road millings placed to create 19 parking spots, this project is one of three short-term solutions approved by the Sandusky City Council at their last meeting held Monday, October 2. Concerned business owners confronted the city at both September meetings, as well as a special meeting held Monday, September 25, with ongoing and possible future parking issues.

According to local businesses, the planned upcoming work by MDOT on M-46 and M-19 would minimize parking options for both customers and business employees in Sandusky’s downtown. Recommendations by the community regarding parking solutions included demolishing the old dance studio and neighboring house on South Morse Street and putting more parking space there.

While discussions are still ongoing, the Sandusky City Council approved re-signing 24 South Morse Street, with the parking lot to be repainted to provide 10 spaces and patchwork to be done to refill pot holes. They also approved the work at the old theater’s location, with that work also adjusting the nearby bus stop’s location and removing cement for the future driveway to that lot. The city will see bids next meeting to replace the concrete.

In addition, the council approved a recommendation to assign two-hour parking for the first row of the Lexington Street Parking lot on the north side, adjacent to the east-west alley, thus providing seven spots for two-hour parking. The two handicapped spaces will remain as is in that row.  The city  plans to continue to provide two to thirty minute parking spots on the southeast corner of that lot for customers, with new signs to be installed.
