With their district superintendent search scheduled, the Sandusky Community School Board will soon have to search for their next high school principal, as longtime principal Steve Carlson will be leaving for Bad Axe’s Huron Intermediate School District as the director of general education . Named junior high principal of the year in 2016, Carlson has been with the district at least since November 2009, when he was named former junior high principal Fred Hicks’ successor.

Though the board has not yet shared when they will begin searching for his replacement, the recent resignation came as a surprise to several, having anticipated the high school principal as a possible superintendent candidate. Carlson will be beginning his duties at the Huron Area Skill Center at the start of the 2023-2024 school year.

In related news, the Sandusky Board of Education met last Thursday with Michigan Association of School Board (MASB) consultant, Rich Ramsey. Ramsey, who is also assisting Deckerville with their almost finished superintendent search, recommended to the board that they accomplish four things at Thursday’s meeting.

This short list of instructions recommended that the board: set the search timeline, determine their candidate profile, establish the salary range, and begin the community survey. The community survey was launched this morning, May 8, on the school’s website.

The survey, which solicits feedback from the community on the superintendent search, ends next Wednesday, May 17, at 4:00 p.m.. With a salary range of approximately $120,000 and $130,000 planned, the board will be meeting at their next special meeting on Monday, May 22, to discuss and decide the candidate profile with the help of the special survey’s results. The board anticipates posting the position by Friday, May 26, with the application closing on Friday, June 9.

While the board will select candidates to interview around June 19, it will almost be a month before the candidates are in the hot seat for the first round of interviews, planned for July 17 and 18. Though the district will have hopefully selected their superintendent by July 25, the board is still deciding whether or not to appoint an interim superintendent.

Their decision could be announced at their next regularly scheduled board meeting on Monday, May 15.
