After much discussion and a final vote around 10:00 p.m. Monday night, the Deckerville Community School Board of Education offered the superintendent position to the district’s current elementary school principal, Matthew Connelly.

The second round of interviews, scheduled to be one hour per candidate, began at 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 8. Connelly, who began as a teacher at Deckerville in 2006, was appointed as the district’s high school principal in 2012. He later transitioned into the elementary principal position, following the abrupt 2019 resignation of former elementary principal, Yvonne O’Connor.

The decision ends a monthslong process working alongside the Michigan Association of School Boards to replace outgoing district superintendent, Michael Hugan, with the search process starting in late February. Since giving his resignation in January, Hugan has interviewed with the Gladwin and Ovid-Elsie school districts.

Hugan’s last day as superintendent is June 30, with Connelly officially taking over July 1st, 2023.
