Port Huron Police Officer dead; two injured in shooting

Police investigate fatal shooting

(CLYDE TOWNSHIP) – An off duty Port Huron Police Department Lieutenant was fatally shot and two other people were wounded in a shooting early this morning in the 4700 block of Atkins Road in Clyde Township.

According to a press release from St. Clair County Undersheriff Tom Buckley, deputies received a call of shots fired with multiple victims shortly before 1:00 a.m.

When they arrived, they located a 29 year old woman and a 57 year old man, who had both sustained gunshot wounds.

It was learned that the woman had run to the man’s residence and pounded on his door, attempting to get away from the suspect. The suspect chased and shot the woman and also the neighbor.

Both were transported to McLaren Port Huron Hospital by Tri-Hospital EMS. Further investigation led to an apartment in the area, where they located a man, deceased from multiple gunshot wounds.

Deputies were able to determine that the victim, an off duty Port Huron Police Lieutenant, was visiting the woman when the attack occurred.

While deputies attended to the victims, it was determined the suspect had fled into the woods. A Port Huron Police K-9 Unit, Port Huron Police officers and deputies from the Sheriff’s Office searched the area, but were unable to locate the suspect.

Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office, along with members of the Port Huron Police Major Crimes Unit continued the investigation, which led to the suspect being located at a gas station on Telegraph Road in the city of Southfield shortly before 5:00 a.m.

The suspect was arrested without incident and transported to the St. Clair County Intervention and Detention Center.

Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office and Port Huron Police Department are continuing the investigation.

Marysville Police, Michigan State Police troopers and the MSP Crime Lab, as well as the Southfield Police Department also assisted in the investigation. Kimball Township Fire and Rescue responded to the scene of the shooting.
