Deckerville Man Sentenced

A 22-year old Deckerville man is facing 10 years in prison when he is sentenced next month following a plea to first degree child abuse. Derek Paehlig pleaded to the charge April 23rd as part of a plea agreement which saw an additional charge of second degree child abuse to be dismissed at sentencing before Sanilac County Circuit Court Judge Donald Teeple. Paehlig remains incarcerated pending sentencing. He was charged after an 11-month old Peck area child in his care was seriously injured. The child was brought to McKenzie Health Systems and later transferred to a Flint Hurley for further treatment.
