One of the two suspects in the double homicide case in Sanilac County’s Greenleaf Township has committed suicide in the Sanilac County jail. According to Sheriff Garry Biniecki, Stephen Shimmel, 47, of Flint, was in a single occupant cell after being arraigned Tuesday afternoon and being observed by security cameras. The sheriff said the entire cell is not covered by cameras, and after a 15-minute span of not seeing Shimmel, Corrections Officers found him hanging in a corner of his cell around 10 p.m. Unsuccessful life-saving efforts were performed on Shimmel before being pronounced deceased.
