Bear on the loose from Summer Winds Farm

UPDATE: 1:30 p.m.

Sheriff Garry Biniecki updated the situation near Brown City, saying they have contained the bear in an area within the perimeter of the farm and are awaiting the arrival of a veterinarian to assist with the sedation to get the animal back to his pen.  Firemen from Brown City and Elk Township have assisted at the scene, according to the Sheriff.

 

(Brown City) – There were some tense and exciting moments for folks near the Summer Winds Farm and Sanctuary Wednesday morning when one of seven bears at the farm escaped captivity.

The Sanilac County sheriff department and several other agencies, including an airplane and a number of fire departments, responded and were able to locate the bear, using use a sedation dart to help return the animal to his home.

Summer Wind Farms Sanctuary owner Chuck Vanneste said he discovered that “somebody cut the locks and let the animals out” sometime Wednesday morning. It was unclear how many of the animals escaped but as of noon, the bear was the only animal still missing.
