Paving projects to begin; Traffic studies to be done

Sanilac County Road Commission officials will be meeting with three contractors next week, in preparation of three more jobs that will get underway later this summer.

Engineer Robb Falls told commissioners Wednesday morning two bridge projects totaling about $775,000 and a million dollar repaving project are set to go. Falls anticipates bridge work on Marlette Road near M-19 and another on Mills Road over the Black River are set to begin within the next few weeks, with a completion date of about 90 days.

The overlay paving of Old 51 from Carsonville to Croswell is scheduled for September.

Two intersections in Sanilac County are scheduled for traffic studies to see what, if any, updating needs to be done to make them safer.

The Road Commission approved spending around $4,000 to have traffic counts and speed studies done at the intersection of Todd Road and Galbraith Line, and the intersection of Germania and Snover Roads.

Numerous serious accidents, some fatal, have taken place at the two heavily traveled intersections and county officials are considering whether or not to add signs or warning lights.

With the onset of summer months, paving projects throughout Sanilac County continue including the repaving of Galbraith Line, east of M-19 in Speaker and Fremont Townships.

12 miles of Juhl Road, Ruth Road and Applegate Road have been repaved by Albrecht Sand and Gravel at a cost of just over $1 million dollars with another million dollars set aside for further road paving improvements countywide.

Road Commission crews recently finished applying more than 16,000 tons of gravel on Worth Township roads and will lay another 3,700 tons in Marlette Township.
