Sandusky school board members interview Paul Flynn

(Sandusky) – After three hours of interviews with three potential candidates to be Sandusky School’s next Superintendent, the Sandusky School Board has selected Paul Flynn, current principal at Yale Schools as their next Superintendent.

The board made their selection after an hour of discussing the interviews. Flynn, who has been with the Yale district for over 20 years, has accepted the position, pending contract details that are expected to be worked out in the coming weeks.

Flynn was the first to interview with the board last Thursday night, answering detailed questions and presenting a 90-day plan, should he be selected. Throughout his career at Yale, Flynn said he has always worked to do what’s best for students and relied heavily on staff in making decisions when needed.

Flynn, who lives in Yale, said he would use the drive to and from work to prepare for the day and to “decompress”” and fully intends to be at Sandusky events, whether it be athletics or arts events such as choir and band concerts, or drama presentations.

After the interviews, the Sandusky board quickly narrowed their decision down to Flynn and Sanilac County native Levi (Jeff) Terpenning who currently serves as principal at Hillsdale Schools. The third candidate was Joseph Perrea who had interviewed for the same position seven years ago when the board hired current superintendent Michael Carmean.

Terpenning has worked in several districts as a coach and worked in the private sector before entering the field of education. He has been at Hillsdale for the past five years and has also held a similar role at Cedarville schools.

In making their decision, the board debated on both candidates, saying either one was capable of leading their district. They agreed the two candidates had two different styles when interviewing and in the end, decided to go with Flynn.

Some members felt Terpenning was an excellent principal and maybe not ready for the next move in his career at this point.

Board President Dr. Robert Hassler, Vice-President mark Davidson and either Treasurer Sue Dryer or Secretary Carolyn Stoutenberg will meet with Flynn in the coming weeks to hammer out details of his contract. He is expected to begin his duties with the Sandusky School District July 1st, pending approval of his contract by both sides.
