Multiple agencies respond to floating ice shanty

A potentially dangerous and tragic situation was avoided Monday evening, but not before multiple agencies responded to what they believed was a possible ice fisherman in distress. Sanilac County sheriff deputies responded to a call from multiple agencies reporting a floating ice shanty in Lake Huron. A Worth Township resident who observed the shanty in the water called police. Lexington Police, Burtchville Fire, Lexington Fire, Croswell EMS, Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and the Huron County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Caseville Fire Department’s air boat were all enroute.

Firemen were able to obtain a name off the shanty and contacted the Shanty owner who said he had contacted the Coast Guard, Village of Lexington and D.N.R. in regards to his shanty being missing from Lexington Harbor. Search and rescue attempts were then called off.

Police said the unoccupied shanty had blown out into the lake from the Lexington Harbor, five miles north of the Emigh Road address.
