Accident claims life of North Branch man

(Burnside Township) – Lapeer County sheriff’s deputies investigated a fatal head-on collision Friday morning on M-90 near Churchill road in Burnside township. James Schaffer, age 29, of North Branch was the driver of a van traveling west on M-90. Authorities say that he crossed over the centerline into the path of an eastbound semi driven by 51-year old Bruce Pullman of Utica.

The van driven by Schaffer went off the south side of the road and came to rest on its side. Schaffer was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The front axle of the semi driven by Pullman broke during the collision and the vehicle came to rest in the center of the roadway. Pullmen was taken to McLaren Hospital in Lapeer for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

The road was closed for 4 1/2 hours. Lapeer county Sheriff’s deputies are continuing to investigate the mishap.
