Area teams compete in Quiz Bowl

The fifth tournament of the Thumb Area Quiz Bowl League’s Fall season took place on Thursday at Bad Axe High School with 12 teams in attendance from Brown City, Carsonville-Port Sanilac, Bad Axe, Ubly, Marlette and Sandusky.

Bad Axe A, won all three preliminary matches with scores of 95-75 over CPS, 95-50 over Bad Axe B, and 115-90 over Ubly.  The two undefeated teams, Bad Axe A and Marlette A faced each other in the championship room with both teams vying to qualify for the State Quiz Bowl Championship at MSU in April.

After a slow start, it was Bad Axe A leading the way throughout the match and ending up with a 170-30 win over Marlette.  Sophomore Jacob Shemka came up with some clutch answers to bonus questions while senior captain Casey Shepherd led volunteer  in the scoring for Bad Axe.

Marlette had wins over Marlette B (55-15), Brown City A (105-55) and Bad Axe B (85-40) in preliminary action.   The Marlette A team is captained by senior, Andrew Gillig.  Seniors John Sanchez, Liz Skakle and also contributed to the wins.

Sandusky A finished in 3rd place with a 120-105 wind over Brown City A in the final match.  While Sandusky A lost their first match to Brown City  B(85-70), they came back with wins over CPS (85-80) in a back and forth match and Marlette B (75-15) in order to hold on to their first place lead in the Fall 2016 standings with just one more match to go.  The league’s final match of the fall season is at home for Sandusky on December 1st.

The Fall 2016 League officially ends on December 8th with the annual Quiz Bowl Bee and Fall League Championship tournament.  The Thumb Area Quiz Bowl League is organized and run voluntarily by Bruce Irland. More information on the program is on the league’s Facebook page.
