Brown City area home damaged in fire

(SANILAC COUNTY) – Brown City firefighters were called to a house fire late Sunday afternoon in Maple Valley Township.

Fire officials say two adults and three children, along with three pet dogs, had to find a new place to stay after flames damaged their home on Maple Valley Road, north of Galbraith Line.

According to Brown City Chief Justin Holsworth, his department responded around 6 p.m. and found flames going up the side of the home from the porch area.

Holsworth said the flames spread to one room inside the home before firefighters from Brown City and Speaker Township brought the fire under control.

Around 8,000 gallons of water was used to extinguish the fire which Holsworth believes started on a grill located on the porch.

The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the family with housing needs after the home sustained extensive smoke damage.

Firefighters remined on scene for two hours and were assisted by Marlette EMS and the Sanilac County Sheriff Department.
