Thumb region shows increased COVID-19 cases

(SANDUSKY) – Sanilac County Emergency management Director Todd Hillman reports the county has sufficient equipment for the time being, but cautions, if numbers continue to escalate, there will be an issue with having enough PPEs for those who need it most.

Hillman said since last week, the number of positive cases in Sanilac County has more than doubled, going from two cases to seven as of Tuesday afternoon.

The County also had their first fatality from the virus, a Worth Township man who was the County’s first confirmed case, back on March 23rd.

Hillman said he has observed people not taking the Stay Home – Stay Safe directive seriously and said if it continues, things will get much worse in Sanilac County quickly, adding residents may end up spending the summer months at home, if they don’t get serious about precautions.

Meanwhile, in St. Clair County, officials are now reporting 32 cases of COVID-19. Two major hospitals in St. Clair County have begun taking transfers of COVID-19 patients from the Detroit-Metro area as hospitals in that region near capacity.

Numbers of positive test results of the coronavirus continue to climb throughout the Thumb region.

Tuscola County Health Department officials continue to receive additional cases of COVID-19, jumping from 5 cases to 10 that have been reported as positive.

Seven of the cases are affiliated with the Tuscola County Medical Care Community with two deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the county.

There are three other cases throughout the county that are considered community acquired with patients ranging in age from 26-88.

Meanwhile in Huron County, the case count remains the same at 3 cases, but officials are warning not to think there is not a problem in the Upper Thumb.
