Money sought to bury remains of homeless woman next to mom

(PORT HURON) — A funeral home is raising money to bury the cremated remains of a 79-year-old Port Huron woman who died in a hit-and-run crash. It took authorities nearly three months to confirm the identity of Eleanor Denise Smith, who was homeless. Investigators discovered that Smith’s mother is buried at a cemetery in Port Huron. No relatives have stepped forward to claim the body. Vick Funeral Home in Mount Clemens is trying to raise money for a funeral and headstone. Smith’s remains would be buried with her mother’s body. Smith was killed September 2, 2015. No one has been arrested. Police believe she was struck by a silver Dodge Dakota or Dodge Ram pickup truck.
