(WATERTOWN TOWNSHIP) — A single vehicle crash involving a box truck in Watertown Township remains under investigation. The crash took place around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning on M-19 near Morris Road. Sanilac County Sheriff’s deputies say the 2000 Chevy C4500 Kodiak box truck was wedged against a tree, dangerously unstable due to a ditch bank, with the driver trapped inside when they arrived on the scene. The initial investigation showed that the box truck, driven by a 29-year old Imlay City resident, was traveling north on M-19 when it veered across the roadway into the oncoming lane of traffic and then off the roadway on the west side. The truck struck several mailboxes, signs, and a large tree before striking a second tree and coming to rest. The passenger in the truck, 22-year old Benjamin Lafferty of Columbus, told deputies that he and the driver were on their way to a job. He was asleep and was awoken by the first impact. He said that he couldn’t see what was happening and jumped out of the passenger side door before the truck hit the second tree. Lafferty was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The driver was flown by Flight Care to St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw with critical injuries. His name is being withheld pending further investigation.
