Five alarm fire claims the lives of three children in Washington Township

A five-alarm house fire took the lives of three children Tuesday morning in Sanilac County’s Washington Township. Deputies from the Sanilac County Sheriff Department were dispatched to the 300 block of Washington Road after central dispatch received a 911 call reporting the fire around 11:07 a.m. on Tuesday, August 19th, with the caller advising that three people were still inside of the home.

Officers from the Sanilac County Sheriff Department responded to the scene, along with Port Sanilac Fire/Rescue, Sandusky Fire Department, Applegate Fire, Croswell Fire and the Carsonville Fire Department. The three victims inside of the home were transported to McKenzie Memorial Hospital and Deckerville Community Hospital via Croswell EMS and Sanilac EMS. The names and ages of the victims are being withheld pending further investigation. 

In a statement released as part of a follow-up press release, the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office said that it is “deeply saddened to provide an update regarding the residential fire that occurred earlier today. It has now been confirmed that the three victims tragically lost their lives as a result of the fire.” 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
