Lexington woman stranded in Lake Huron

Police responded to a stranded boater

 
(Lexington) – Sanilac Central Dispatch received a call from a Lexington woman late Sunday, Saying that she was on her paddle boat off of Lexington Harbor and could not get back to shore due to the west winds blowing her east. Dispatchers learned during the call that she had recently moved to Michigan from Nevada and was not familiar with Lake Huron and its weather conditions. The 54-year old woman did not have a life jacket on at the time of the incident.

According to Sgt. Matt Armstrong, Sanilac County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched just before 8 p.m. and responded to the scene in their patrol boat. A Lexington Police Officer responded to the area by land and located the female in the water using binoculars. While enroute, Deputies were advised contact had been lost contact with the female by phone.
Just prior to Deputies arrival, the female had called Dispatch again and stated that the paddle boat had begun taking on water. Deputies arrived on scene several minutes later and rescued the female and her small dog from the paddle boat, approximately 1.5 miles east of the Lexington Harbor.
The woman told police she had been in the water since approximately 3:30 p.m. She stated that for the past two hours she had been trying to get back to shore but was unsuccessful and she finally made the 9-1-1 call.
Sheriff Garry Biniecki said without Deputies and First Responders quick response, and the subject not having a life jacket with her, the incident could of had a tragic outcome.
Deputies were assisted on scene by Lexington Police and Fire. The woman was treated by Croswell EMS and released.
