The Sanilac County Parks Commission’s five-year park and recreation plan was made official Tuesday afternoon, when the Sanilac County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to adopt the plan as a guideline for improving recreation in Sanilac County. The plan includes a number of major improvements at the county’s four public parks, to be implemented over the next five years.

Planned improvements at Forester Park include the upgrade of the park’s electrical system to offer 50 amp hookups at all 200 of the park’s campsites; the construction of a new pickelball court; developing an ADA compliant nature trail; and the construction of additional cabins. The five-year plan at Forester park will culminate with an ADA compliant splash pad in 2030.

At Evergreen Park, plans include the planting of a viewing and serenity garden using plants native to Michigan; the expansion of the playground area; offering Wi-Fi throughout the park; the addition of 27 more camp sites along the south side of the park; adding a dog park; and the addition of a disc golf course, fish cleaning station, and laundry facilities.

Improvements at Lexington Park will kick off with the implementation of the park’s accessibility plan for ADA compliance. Additional projects include the construction of a bath house in the day use area, erecting a seawall, and building a new dog park.

Delware Park’s plan is highlighted by the construction of 20 new cabins at the south end of the park. The new cabins will include water, sewer and electric, with some being ADA accessible. 10 of the cabins are planned to be built in 2027, with the other 10 slated for 2030. An 850 foot long by 20 foot wide dirt road, complete with a 60 foot cul-de-sac, will be built for access to the new cabins. Other improvements at Delaware Park include new playground equipment, a new basketball and/or pickelball court, and the establishment of horse or walking trails.

The five-year plan will be funded by numerous grant applications, in addition to the Sanilac County Parks Commission’s budget.
