Following a minor traffic crash involving a bicycle and a vehicle, the Port Huron Police Department is reminding drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians to remain vigilant while traveling the roads this summer.
The reminder comes following an incident on Tuesday, May 19, shortly before 4 p.m., when officers responded to the intersection of Gratiot Avenue and Garfield Street in Port Huron for a reported traffic crash between a bike and a pickup truck. Upon arrival, officers learned that the pickup truck had struck a juvenile who was riding the bike, with the truck’s driver ultimately being cited for disregarding a red traffic signal.
The juvenile was alert and speaking with officers at the scene. The juvenile was later evaluated and treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.
As the weather warms up, law enforcement wishes to remind the community that vigilance is necessary as the number of bicyclists and pedestrians will increase with the warm weather. It is important for everyone to use caution, obey traffic control devices, and respect all roadway rights-of-way to prevent future accidents.
