The Sandusky City Council will be considering a contract for the city’s next police chief at next Monday’s meeting, ending several months of confusion and delay.
Sandusky’s City Council will meet on Monday, September 15, to review the contract put forward by City Manager Dave Faber for candidate Steve McKenny. Though second interviews for the candidates were initially planned, the personnel committee, as made up by council members Larry Mitchell, Ginny Bissett and Tim Torp, decided on candidate selection during a meeting on Thursday, September 4.
In addition to the background check results, a factor that played into the committee’s decision appeared to be that candidate Kelly Trowhill is not currently certified under the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards, and would need to undergo certification classes in October.
McKenny, who serves as the liaison officer for the Sandusky Community School District, retired from 25 years of service at the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office in 2023. If the contract is approved by the council, McKenny would be replacing Police Chief Brett Lester, who officially retired on September 1, 2025.
Sandusky police officer Matthew Gezequel is currently serving as the city’s police chief in the interim.
