Two of the Thumb’s representatives joined over 30 others last Thursday in a bipartisan coalition of legislators calling on the Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees to add representation from the state’s agriculture industry on the institution’s recently announced presidential search committee.

Republican state senator Dan Lauwers represents the 25th Senate District covering Huron and Sanilac counties, portions of Tuscola, St. Clair and Macomb counties, and Kevin Daley represents the 26th district of the state, which encompasses portions of Lapeer, Tuscola, Genesee and Saginaw counties.

Daley, of Lum, gathered support from 31 other state legislators who signed a letter he authored to the MSU’s trustees urging them to correct the oversight. The university’s board announced its 29-member presidential search committee early last week.

Lauwers, who hails from Brockway Township and graduated from MSU with a degree in agricultural economics, pointed to the university’s close ties with the state’s farmers and others in the agriculture industry as a critical factor that has helped make Michigan a global leader in agriculture.

The resolution seeking to add such a representative to the search committee, also known as Resolution 51, has received bipartisan support and remains before the Senate for further consideration.
