Marysville man drowns at Lighthouse Beach; body recovered near Blue Water Bridge

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the drowning death of a Marysville man yesterday afternoon.

Donald Maul, age 58, and his wife were spending the day at Lighthouse beach in Port Huron when Maul jumped into the water without a life jacket while trying to set his anchors.

Starting to struggle against the strong current, he began calling for help, realizing he would be unable to make it back to shore or the boat. Floating away from the boat, the current kept pulling him under, with reports of him going under and not resurfacing. He was found just south of the Blue Water Bridge in 42 feet of water, with his body being recovered hours later.

Responding to the scene was the St. Clair County Dive Team and Marine Division, the US Coast Guard and the Port Huron Fire Department.
