Former Congressman Paul Mitchell passes away at age 64

Family members say former Michigan congressman Paul Mitchell has died from cancer. The 64-year old Mitchell, of Dryden Township, had earlier chosen not to seek a third two-year term representing Michigan’s 10th Congressional District. He died Sunday and is survived by his wife and six children. He finished his final term sitting as an Independent.
In a statement, Mitchell’s wife Sherry said her husband was “the embodiment of what we can be if we choose to love and fight for what matters.” Mitchell, a businessman, first came to prominence in 2015 as a leader of the Coalition Against Higher Taxes and Special Interest Deals, a group that successfully fought former Gov. Rick Snyder’s ballot proposal to increase the sales tax and fuel taxes to fund road repairs.Earlier, Mitchell worked in career technical training at Chrysler before joining Ross Education, LLC, a company that prepared people for careers in medical and technical fields. He went on to become the company’s chairman. Mitchell had revealed in June that he had had been diagnosed with renal cancer.
