Lake Huron accident involves five; Successful rescue

(Port Sanilac) – Three adults were hospitalized on Sunday for treatment of hypothermia after two other adults attempted to rescue them from Lake Huron after almost an hour in thew water.

According to the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Department, a call of several individuals in the water north of the Port Sanilac Harbor in Sanilac Township came in Sunday just before noon.

Sheriff’s deputies and emergency crews responded to the harbor and a beach access point at the end of Murphy Drive to help the subjects.

Police said 22-year-old Alyssa Sims-Craig fell off a jet ski and was unable to get back on before friends John Quinn and Tyler Hogsten, both 20, paddled out on kayaks in an attempt to help her.

Nineteen-year-old Patricia Smith and friend Chase Hines, also 20, also tried to help the three to shore before her jet ski began to take on water.

Sanilac EMS and Port Sanilac Fire Rescue administered First Aid to three of the five before they were transported to McKenzie Hospital for treatment.

All five were wearing life jackets and alcohol was not considered to be a factor, according to police.
