(Lexington) – Although they have been considering the pros and cons for some time, the Lexington village council has authorized additional police coverage with the Sanilac County Sheriff Department, effective immediately.
The move comes on the heels of a second early morning robbery in Lexington within a span of just over two weeks. Until contracting with the county, Lexington did not have full-time police coverage.
Village officials said the agreement with the sheriff’s office will cost about $44 an hour plus mileage this year and around $45 an hour next year.
For the second time in two weeks, the Valero gas station in Lexington was a victim of an armed robbery. Store officials from the Valero gas station and party store said they were robbed at gun point early Thursday morning.
Police and store officials believe this suspect is a different one than the one that robbed the Lexington business earlier this month.
As a result of the robberies, and despite tourist season rapidly approaching, store owners said they may stop being a 24-hour business, for the safety of their employees.
Village officials and the Sheriff Department acted quickly to work out details of the extra coverage to help promote the safety and well-being of Lexington residents and visitors.
