Emergency personnel participate in table top exercise

Marlette Regional Hospital was host to the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team for a Table-Top Exercise involving an active shooter with multiple casualties this week.

Several agencies from the area participated in the exercise, including Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement, Hospital Staff, Administration, and City Officials. Representatives participated from Lapeer, Tuscola and Sanilac Counties, each bringing several available resources.

The Emergency Support Team consisted of Trooper Kearns, Sgt. Casanova and Sgt. Stoppa. The Team walked participants through an active shooter scenario, which initiated discussion and the thought process of “what would you?” and “how would you react?” The 3 hour training involved break out groups and full group participation.

Marlette Police Chief Brian McGinnis said the event was a step forward in preparing for the day they hope never comes to Marlette. Follow up training will be conducted by the Michigan State Police to include multi-law enforcement agencies, as well as Fire and EMS personnel from all three counties.

In the future, McGinnis said area agencies would like to have a full scale mock scenario where first responders and hospital staff work together and become better prepared.

Officials are currently working towards training dates and times to continue the mutual aid between all three counties with Police, Fire, EMS and County Dispatchers.
