A recount of votes in Deckerville has resulted in a new Clerk

Deckerville has another new clerk, as a result of a recount conducted at the Sanilac County courthouse earlier this morning. Connie Dempsey had been working the past several weeks, replacing longtime Clerk Audrey Stolicker who retired. At the November election, Dempsey had won by one vote over Monica Kunze, 131-130.

Kunze requested a recount and according to County Clerk Denise McGuire, Kunze gained one vote to tie the two candidates with 131 votes each. In a tie-breaker where two pieces of paper were placed in a hat with “elected” and not elected”, Dempsey drew first and pulled out the “not elected” slip of paper. Kunze now takes over as Deckerville’s new clerk.
