Bad Axe man sentenced in death of flagman on M-142

(HURON COUNTY) — The Bad Axe man charged with committing a moving violation causing death pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge Thursday. 58-year old Dale Peyerk was sentenced to 60 days in jail and ordered to pay court costs and fines. He will also be on probation for a year with 60 days in jail deferred upon successful completion. The case stems from a crash last December that claimed the life of 21-year old Nathan Hayden of Kalkaska, who was working as a flagman during a road construction project. Authorities say Hayden was standing near a flashing arrow sign trailer on M-142 west of Scott Road in Huron County’s Verona Township when he was struck by a pickup driven by Peyerk. Hayden was thrown flowing impact and pronounced dead at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. The charge carried a penalty of 1-year in jail and or a $2,000 fine.
