An active shooter at a local business in Almont Township killed one and sent several schools into lockdown as he fled the scene on Wednesday morning.
Officers from the Almont Police Department were dispatched to Trims Unlimited around 8:20 a.m., with multiple agencies ultimately responding to the scene. Upon arrival at the business, one individual was transported to a local hospital, where they passed due to their injuries.
Though the suspect, a 32-year-old Columbus man, fled the scene, leading law enforcement on a chase on I-69 that damaged five patrol vehicles, he was finally taken into custody in the 2000 block of Sutton Road in the Metamora area by another responding agency. The suspect was shot several times when he was arrested, with two deputies engaging with him before shooting.
The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office has requested assistance from the Michigan State Police to investigate the deputy-involved shooting. The MSP Special Investigation Section, MSP Crime Lab- Bridgeport, and several other resources are being deployed to assist, while the deputies have been placed on paid leave.
In addition to the five patrol vehicles from four different departments being damaged, three officers required minor medical care for injuries sustained from chase-related traffic crashes. The suspect is currently receiving medical attention and is reported in stable condition.
With the suspect in custody, there is no ongoing threat to the public. An active investigation is underway, with reports to be forwarded to the Lapeer County Prosecutor’s office for review once the investigation is complete.
