The Huron County Sheriff’s Office found themselves very busy this past weekend, with patrol deputies responding to over 55 calls for service, including accidents, traffic stops, disturbances and rescues.

Sheriff Kelly Hanson reports that some notable incidents of the weekend included sheriff’s deputies responding to an aircraft accident on Saturday, August 23, around 11:00 a.m. in Caseville. An hour later, deputies were responding via airboat in the Sebewaing area to rescue two Dryden men from their disabled boat.

The sheriff’s office finished off Saturday with a visit to Sleepers State Park around 11:00 p.m., due to a 39-year-old Flint man causing a disturbance while walking around with a knife. The Flint man, believed to have been under the influence of an unknown substance, did drop the weapon as instructed by Huron County Sheriff’s Deputy Troy Wells, but would not get on the ground so officers could handcuff and arrest him. Though Deputy Wells did get the knife away from the man, he did get punched in the face in the process. Though the deputy responded by tasing the suspect, the suspect continued to fight the deputy, and was eventually handcuffed after other campers assisted the deputy.

The man is being held on a $50,000 bond, and is facing five felonies and two misdemeanors, with more charges possibly being sought.

Deputy Wells was not seriously injured, and was assisting Deputy Austin Volmering with a domestic violence call in Grindstone about 90 minutes later. That call saw a 46-year-old White Lake man arrested for physically assaulting his 37-year-old girlfriend. The woman was taken to Thumb McLaren Hospital by Central Huron Ambulance to be treated for broken ribs. Investigators say alcohol was a large factor in the incident. Further charges are also possible, with Child Protective Services also contacted due to young children witnessing the chaos that led to the assault.

The weekend finished up with an incident that requires public assistance, with Deputy Austin Volmering reporting a high speed chase Sunday afternoon. Some time after 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, the deputy took note of an eastbound, grey Odyssey minivan on Purdy Road, in Paris Township, as his radar indicated it was going over 80 mph. He attempted to stop it, with speeds reaching 120 mph, but eventually ended the pursuit miles later at the Sanilac County Line on Schock Road.

The van is believed to be local to the southern Huron or Northern Sanilac County area. Anyone with information on who the owner may be is asked to call the Huron County Sheriff’s office at 989-269-6500.
