Teaching staff for Croswell-Lexington School District picketed outside of the high school on Tuesday, July 1, demanding a fair contract and better pay a week after the district’s Board of Education approved 3% raises for multiple employees, except for teachers.
The protest, which ran from about 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. yesterday, came a day after teaching contracts in the district expired without a new deal being reached. It is unclear at the moment why negotiations for the teaching contract have failed thus far, with the Croswell-Lexington District Board of Education voting on Monday, June 23, to approve contracts for over 15 positions, including building administrators, administrative assistants to both the superintendent and assistant superintendent, the district’s chief financial officer and the assistant superintendent.
Meanwhile, protest organizers report that teachers were not offered the 3% raise the other positions received, with only teaching staff at the top pay receiving a one-time bonus. They also warn that if action is not taken, the district is in danger of “another mass exodus of teachers again.”
While there are tentative plans for another protest, details have not yet been shared, and will be released following the holiday weekend. The district’s board will meet again at 7:00 p.m. on July 14, 2025, in the middle school’s media center.
