Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office warns of scammer claiming to be police lieutenant

phonescam23

The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of a phone scam involving an individual falsely identifying themselves as “Lieutenant Stevens” from their agency.

The caller claims that the person has an outstanding warrant or is on the sex offender registry and demands payment of fines and costs. Victims are being instructed to go to Walmart or similar retailers to purchase pre-paid Visa or gift cards and then provide the card numbers over the phone.

The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office wants to be clear that this is a scam. There is no Lieutenant Stevens on staff at the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office, and law enforcement will never call and demand payment of any kind, let alone via pre-paid cards, gift cards or any form of instant money transfer.

If you receive a suspicious call, do not provide any personal or financial information to the caller and hang up immediately.
