A man required rescue from his burning home in Lexington Township yesterday afternoon, according to the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office.
Sanilac County Central Dispatch received a call shortly after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, regarding a smoke investigation in the 6500 block of Lexington Township’s Roach Road, with the original caller contacting Central Dispatch again to report his residence was full of smoke at 1:19 p.m.
The caller reported that he was trapped in the residence, being unable to get out due to medical conditions.
Upon arrival at the scene, Lexington Police Chief Larry Sheldon, Croswell Police Lt. Zachary Overstreet, and Sanilac County Sheriff’s Sgt. Todd Laming observed the residence, noting heavy smoke and fire. Entry was first attempted through the main door, but the heavy smoke prevented rescue attempts.
Officers were able to locate the resident in a bedroom through an exterior window, with several more attempts made to rescue the man. However, those attempts were ineffective due to the heavy smoke.
With help from the Croswell and Port Sanilac Fire Departments, the victim was extricated through the exterior window using a chainsaw. The victim was transported to Port Huron McLaren for treatment of his injuries by Croswell EMS.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time.
