In addition to entering closed session to discuss periodic personnel evaluations at Monday night’s meeting, the Sandusky City Council heard updates on the city’s streetlights.

Plans to replace the city’s streetlights stem as far back as 2022, when the city planned to work with DTE to convert the lights to LED during MDOT’s M-46/M-19 construction project in 2024.

City Manager Dave Faber met with DTE and Dan’s Excavating twice in the past week to discuss the work, with the city’s Board of Public Works also doing a walkthrough of all current downtown lights. With various lights in town being of different height and design, it was decided the lights should be made uniform.

The council voted to replace the streetlights located on the southside, west of M-19, with new 12-foot decorative poles with lantern tops for an estimated $30,000. According to Faber, DTE will begin that work by the end of this week.

Also discussed at the May 19 meeting was the stripping and selling of the police department’s Chevy Tahoe, with the vehicle being sidelined from patrol duty due to mechanical issues. The money gained from the vehicle’s sale will be put back into the safety fund for use towards a new patrol vehicle.
