A resolution from state Rep. Greg Alexander, of Carsonville, designating May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month was approved Tuesday by the Michigan House.

The measure honors the motorcycle community’s commitment to safety and reminds every driver on Michigan’s roadways that awareness saves lives. It encourages motorcycle operators to don proper protective riding attire, abide by the rules of the road and perform regular safety and maintenance checks, while also serving as a reminder to car and truck drivers to be watchful now that motorcyclists are once again frequenting public roadways and sharing them with vehicles.

Michigan has over 230,000 registered motorcycles and over 610,000 people who have operator licenses with a motorcycle endorsement.

Alexander is in his second term serving the 98th House District, which includes residents in portions of Lapeer, Sanilac and Tuscola counties, as well as all of Huron County.
