A little under a year after the hospital’s board of directors approved moving forward on applying for a USDA loan to fund construction of a new hospital campus, McKenzie Memorial Hospital is taking another step in the building journey.
With the hospital seeking approval for the property split, the city of Sandusky will be holding a planning commission meeting at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 6, at Sandusky’s City Hall. Representatives from the hospital plan to meet with city officials to discuss the special land use permit from MMH Property Group LLC & McKenzie Memorial Hospital. The meeting is open to the public, with citizens curious about the ongoing project able to attend if they choose.
When the new hospital project was announced last year, it was originally anticipated that construction could begin as early as spring of this year. However, as the project continued, the timeline was adjusted, with groundbreaking now tentatively slated for a July or August date. That estimate is still subject to change, with McKenzie’s Marketing, Communications, and Foundation Director, Gloria Jerome, noting that they “can only estimate at this time based on the loan process timing being out of our control.”
She further explained that, once the loan documents are submitted, the project’s timeline will depend on “on how fast the USDA responds and how fast [they] can find investment bankers that will handle the bond issuance.”
With the hospital waiting on the final version of their financial feasibility study, the loan application is close to being submitted. Other moves being made for the project include hiring of the Christman Company as the project’s construction management company and holding a “Subcontractor Community Outreach Event” on Tuesday, February 6.
The construction project would include a wide entrance for the facility on M-46, a second entrance on Gates Road, and parking lots.
