Sterling Heights man shot in wrist at area campground

Weekend plans of working at a private property campgrounds in Huron County turned into a 49-year old Sterling Heights man going to the hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. Sheriff Kelly Hanson said the accidental shooting happened around 6 p.m. Friday. According to Hanson, the victim and another man had been raking leaves and were going to sit at a table when a 9mm handgun was starting to fall from a holster of a 24-year old man. The two men attempted to catch the gun before it fell onto the ground and in the scuffle, the gun discharged, striking the Sterling Heights man in the wrist, through a wrist watch. A 60-year old Port Austin man witnessed the incident and helped administer first aid until rescue crews arrived. Deputies say the blast from the gun blew the victim’s watch off his hand as the bullet exited his wrist. The man was taken to McLaren Thumb Regional hospital in Bad Axe for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
