A 60-year old Fort Gratiot man who is in jail facing 27 charges of sex crimes, through his attorney, has asked Circuit Court officials to be released until his trial, out of fear of contacting Coronavirus. Instead, Mark Olson was given a $2 million dollar bond and remanded to jail. Olson, who could be facing up to life in prison if convicted, was originally bound over to Circuit Court in February on 24 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and three counts of possession of child sexually abusive material. His lawyer said Olson faces the possibility of contracting COVID-19 in the jail where eight inmates and a number of staff have tested positive. However, jail officials have said Olson is alone in a cell and no one in his area has contracted Coronavirus. No trial date has been set.
