Sandusky seeks grant; buys machine

The City of Sandusky is pursuing an energy grant that if approved, would mean an additional $25,000 dollars to the city coffers for updates to city hall and the DPW building.
City Manager Dave Faber told council members Monday evening the money is available, all they had to do was apply. City officials have made a list of items that could be purchased to replace outdated items, including a new furnace system at the DPW garage and energy efficient upgrades at city hall.
Faber said the city could receive an answer shortly after grant submission with the money to be spent by August, as part of the program.
In other city news, council gave approval of purchasing a new crack-seal machine at a cost of over $44,000 dollars.
DPW employees have had a chance to demo a new unit and Supervisor Matt Harris recommended the purchase to council. City officials say with the machine, they will be able to extend the life of some city streets.
Faber and council also discussed renting the unit, and an employee, out to surrounding communities, as a way to supplement the equipment fund.
