In addition to picking candidates for the November gubernatorial and Senate races, Sanilac County voters headed to the polls yesterday to decide the fate of several proposed tax millages, bond measures and ordinances in the local area.
In terms of contested candidate races, the most competition was seen in the Republican primary for Sanilac County Road Commissioner, where candidate Grant Stone outpaced opponent Troy Sweet, 3687 to 2407.
County proposals for Sanilac County consisted of four millage renewals, with the Drug Task Force millage passing handily, with 7034 yes votes and 3100 no votes. The remaining three millages, which asked for the renewal of funding for the county’s parks and 911 Emergency Services, as well as the Sanilac Area Violence Elimination and Education Partnership, all passed with similar vote margins.
In terms of city proposals, Brown City voters approved a park millage,155-64. The City of Marlette had two proposals to consider, including an ordinance prohibiting marihuana establishments in the city. That ordinance, originally put forward as a petition by Charles Bush, as brought by him as a private citizen and not as mayor of Marlette, was rejected, 342-207. The other ballot measure pertained to a new city of Marlette Parks and Recreation Millage, which was approved, 327-212.
Road maintenance renewal millages in the townships of Austin, Bridgehampton, Buel, Delaware, Lamotte, Maple Valley, Minden, and Worth were all approved, as were fire protection millages in the townships of Delaware, Elk, Forester, and Speaker. Marlette Township’s Recreational Services Millage was narrowly rejected in a vote of 295 against and 239 in favor.
The Village of Deckerville approved renewing a millage for local police protection, while Minden City’s general operating millage was also approved.
The school districts of Carsonville-Port Sanilac and Marlette both had their funding proposals approved, with CPS Schools being approved 620-407 for a renewed operating millage, and Marlette Schools’s bond proposal being approved 737-659. Also passing as part of the August 4th primary was the Aitken District Library of Croswell’s millage renewal, with yes votes a little more than double of the votes against the measure.
