The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a domestic assault involving a gun that occurred Friday night.

Sanilac County Central Dispatch was contacted shortly before 10 p.m. on Friday, May 1, with a report of a domestic violence incident in progress in the 3500 block of Old M-51 Road in Lexington Township.

A 52-year-old Lexington Township woman reported that she had been assaulted by her 54-year-old boyfriend, also of Lexington Township. During the altercation, a firearm was reportedly involved, but the victim was able to escape the residence and seek assistance.

Deputies arriving on scene located the victim and ensured she received medical treatment from Croswell EMS. She was later transported to McLaren Port Huron for further treatment of her injuries.

The male suspect remained inside the residence and initially refused to exit or communicate with responding officers. Given the reported involvement of a firearm, officers established a secure perimeter. After a period of time, the suspect exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.

The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Croswell Police Department, Lexington Police Department, Sanilac County Drug Task Force, St. Clair County Special Response Team, Port Huron Police Department Special Response Team, Croswell EMS, and the Sanilac County Road Commission. The incident remains under investigation.
