The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office says that an incident Tuesday morning ended with a family reunion rather than tragedy after the office was tasked with finding a missing 84-year-old woman.

Deputies were dispatched shortly after 4 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17, to a home on Hasler Lake Road in Lapeer after an 84-year-old woman was reported missing. Investigators established that the woman had been staying with relatives due to believed signs of dementia, with the woman being last seen the previous night at 11 p.m.

Discovered tracks suggested that the woman left the residence and traveled towards a wooded area. Environmental and weather conditions were a significant concern, as the missing woman was not dressed for the weather, with the area experiencing snow showers, strong winds and low temperatures. A search was immediately launched, with members of the Lapeer County Search and Rescue, Canine Division and Drone Division assisting in search efforts.

Shortly after 6 a.m., a resident about a quarter of a mile away on Hasler Road contacted county dispatch to report they had found a woman crying and talking outside, repeating that she was cold. Deputies confirmed that it was the missing woman, with Lapeer EMS responding and transporting the woman to McLaren Lapeer Hospital for medical assessment.
