The wife of State Senator Dan Lauwers is facing two felony charges for allegedly embezzling from the Yale Chamber of Commerce while serving as its treasurer.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the two charges on Monday, March 9, against Kellie Lauwers, 64, of Yale. Lauwers has been charged with one count of Embezzlement by an Agent or Servant, $20,000 or more but less than $50,000, a 10-year felony, and one count of Using a Computer to Commit a Crime, a 10-year felony.
Lauwers served as the Yale Chamber of Commerce Treasurer from 2019 to February 2025.The chamber revealed to its members in December 2024 that Lauwers was involved in an alleged embezzlement case.
According to a lawsuit originally filed by the chamber last year, Lauwers allegedly began embezzling in December 2022, and had taken $32,300 from the chamber via checks written to herself. The embezzlement was discovered in November 2024, when a review of profit statements showed discrepancies, and further investigation found that Lauwers had allegedly forged signatures of other board members.
In the original complaint, the chamber says Lauwers admitted to the theft but claimed she would not repay the money, even threatening to move the money out of her name to make it unreachable in the event of a judgment against her.
Via Monday’s press release, it is now alleged that she embezzled a total of $35,200 from the chamber. This matter was investigated by the Michigan State Police.
Lauwers will be arraigned in the 72nd District Court in Port Huron. An arraignment date has not yet been set, though a $10,000 cash or surety bond was set Friday, March 6, according to court records.
