
A four alarm house fire in Sanilac County’s Custer Township claimed the life of a 79-year-old man early Saturday morning. Sanilac County Central Dispatch received a call just after 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 14th for a residential structure fire in the 2800 block of North Sandusky Road.
Authorities say six people, including two children, were inside the home at the time. Investigators say a 24-year-old woman was able to escape and ran to a neighboring home for help. When fire crews from Deckerville, Sandusky, Moore Township and Argyle arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames. It was later confirmed the 79-year-old man was still inside. He was found deceased in the residence. A 51-year-old woman and the 24-year-old woman were transported by Sanilac EMS to McKenzie Health System and later transferred to Hurley Medical Center for additional treatment.
The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau is investigating, with assistance from the Michigan State Police Fire Investigator and the Sanilac County Medical Examiner’s Office. The American Red Cross and Sanilac County Road Commission also assisted at the scene. Names are being withheld pending family notification. The incident remains under investigation.
