The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that a man took his own life, rather than be taken into custody on Thursday.

Detectives with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office arrived just before 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, to the 3200 block of Carrigan Road in Fort Gratiot Township in an attempt to take a man into custody on a criminal sexual conduct warrant.

However, as officers approached the residence, a single gunshot was heard, with the sheriff’s office determining the subject had just shot himself. Upon entering the home, officers found the man with a gunshot wound. Despite life saving measures being attempted, the man passed from his self-inflicted injury.

During a subsequent search of the home, officers found what appeared to be a home made bomb. Law enforcement immediately exited the home and evacuated the surrounding homes, while the MSP Bomb Squad was called in. It was determined that the apparent bomb was a realistic prop and there were no explosives present.

The 55 year old man was the only person in the home, with no one else injured.
